First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence gcash
Then, the crack in his voice gcash
If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health gcash
That is, until now gcash
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior gcash
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little gcash
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable gcash
But soon may be too soon gcash
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago gcash
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi gcash
“He’s not somebody you should be taking a short-notice [fight] with, but I needed it,” Volkanovski began gcash
“Obviously a lot of people will say it’s for the money and all that, but it was much more than that gcash
It is hard, it is really hard for athletes gcash
gcash
gcash
Sorry, um gcash
gcash
gcash
I never thought I would struggle with it,” he continued, ignoring the blood over his eye, instead wiping a tear from beneath it gcash
“But for some reason when I wasn’t fighting or in camp gcash
gcash
gcash
F***, sorry,” he said, attempting a laugh, looking away and to the ceiling, then gently rapping his hand on the table to bring himself back into the room gcash

“I needed a fight, and this opportunity came up gcash
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t training as much as I should have, but I thought I had to do it gcash
I had to take it gcash
I’m telling myself, ‘It’s meant to be gcash
’ I was struggling a little bit not fighting, doing my head in gcash
I don’t know how; everything’s fine, I’ve got a beautiful family gcash
But, I don’t know gcash
gcash
gcash
I think you just need to keep busy gcash
I need to be in camp, otherwise, I’m going to do my head in gcash
“It’s weird, [it’s not that I] never ‘believed in that stuff’, but I never got it gcash
It was something that – I don’t know – maybe the more and more I learn about myself, the more I understand gcash
I talked about us having a smile on my face, me and my wife gcash
My wife could see it does get hard, I don’t know why gcash
”Makhachev consoles Volkanovski after their fight, the main event of UFC 294 (AP)Volkanovski pointed to the birth of his third child, in August, and surgery on an injury this summer as reasons why he had not been training gcash
Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer gcash
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight gcash
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession gcash
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted gcash
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable gcash
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring gcash
It must gcash
He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January gcash
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him gcash
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave gcash
That is even clearer now than it was last week gcash
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it gcash

As often was the case amid an American society embedded in racism in the 1980s, Muhammed Ali put it best gcash
Advising black racing driver Willy T Ribbs, the people’s champion made his point in no uncertain terms: “There are Blacks in my sport gcash
But there are no Blacks in your sport gcash
“They’re going to want to kill you gcash
”Yet for all the death threats, discrimination and abuse, Ribbs had long decided that the only option was to meet the uphill battle head-on gcash
He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car gcash
Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events gcash
But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all gcash
Don’t let me tell you though; let the man himself gcash
“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed gcash
Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride gcash
“But I enjoyed it gcash
It didn’t make me mad, it was fun gcash
I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me gcash
I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating gcash
I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs gcash
”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality gcash
A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 gcash
So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” gcash
But to this interview, he’s late gcash
And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems gcash
It was the racing way or the highway gcash
Ribbs faced an avalanche of racism and abuse throughout his career (Getty)“I was born in this sport,” he tells The Independent, from his home in Texas gcash
“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill gcash
That’s all that was discussed in the family gcash
We didn’t discuss any other sport gcash
“I was lucky, I think gcash
At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be gcash
Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did gcash
And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One gcash
”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s gcash
He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too gcash
But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril gcash
Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer gcash
But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time gcash
Ribbs made history in an F1 test in 1986 and in the Indy 500 in 1991 (Getty)“All that mattered was I thought of myself as a race driver,” he says gcash
“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team gcash
For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders gcash
“Sure gcash
I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done gcash
And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it gcash
But for me? It was about going fast gcash
”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali gcash
“What I admired about him the most was not his gcash boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali gcash
“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled gcash
Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while gcash
’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about gcash
“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs gcash
“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience gcash
The attention went off the chart gcash
That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods gcash
“He’s a very kind man gcash
He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way gcash
He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair gcash
Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with gcash
Willy T Ribbs was treated differently gcash
”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world gcash
And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made gcash
“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says gcash
“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One gcash
’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ gcash
